CHAPTER XXIV: The Effects of Lunar Eclipses

The following are the principal effects of Lunar eclipses when falling in the decanates of each sign.

[Editor’s Note: As in the previous chapter, the Chaldean rulers of each decan have been inserted into the original text. As with solar eclipse, making use of the planetary ruler of the decan where the eclipsed Moon falls. The placement and the houses governed by the decan ruler should be part of the delineation of the effects of the eclipse.]

[For example, suppose the eclipsed Moon fell in the 1st decan of Capricorn ruled by Jupiter in a chart with Cancer rising, Moon in the 6th, Jupiter in the 12th, Sagittarius on the cusp of the 6th and Pisces on the MC. As with the example given for solar eclipses, Moon ruling the ASC in the 6th suggests a public health matter. Jupiter ruling the decan of the eclipsed Moon and also governing the 6th and lying in the 12th of the eclipse chart suggests an illness of epidemic of significant proportions. Jupiter ruling the MC presages a major government response to the public health crisis. These two eclipse examples are taken from the great influenza pandemic of 1918 which killed millions of people worldwide. See Appendix I for more details.]

[As in the previous chapter, I have added the tarot card corresponding to each decanate according to the system of the Golden Dawn. Raphael did not mention tarot in his work, but it is an interesting exercise to compare divination systems.]

Aries lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Mars]. Fevers, incendiarism, firing of woods and forests, and dryness of the air. [Two of Wands]

Second decanate [Sun]. Pestilence. [Three of Wands]

Third decanate [Venus]. Causes abortive births, incommodities, and dangers to women. [Four of Wands]

Taurus lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Mercury]. Death and diseases among cattle. [Five of Coins]

Second decanate [Moon]. Death of some queen, and a scarcity of seeds, and barrenness of the earth. [Six of Coins]

Third decanate [Saturn]. Chief effects will be manifest among snakes and creeping things, which will perish by the million. [Seven of Coins]

Gemini lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Jupiter]. Threatens incursions and rapines of enemies. [Eight of Swords]

Second decanate [Mars]. Brings sudden motion of armies, and the solicitation of private and public bodies. [Nine of Swords]

Third decanate [Sun]. Causes death of some illustrious and renowned man. [Ten of Swords]

Cancer lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Venus]. Excites and stirs up wars. [Two of Cups]

Second decanate [Mercury]. Causes grievous exactions, intolerable tributes, taxes and such like burdens. [Three of Cups]

Third decanate [Moon]. Brings death to the female sex; sudden destruction and miseries. [Four of Cups]

Leo lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Saturn]. Brings the sudden infirmity of some king; or the death of a great man. [Five of Wands]

Second decanate [Jupiter]. Journey of the king, and mutation of things. [Six of Wands]

Third decanate [Mars]. Stirs up the people and armies to new attempts at sedition and insurrection. [Seven of Wands]

Virgo lunar eclipse.

First decanate [Sun]. Causes sickness and infirmities to the king, and various seditions and discords among men. [Eight of Coins]

Second decanate [Venus].
